National engagement: Indigenous Agriculture & Food Systems (IAFS)
Overview
The Indigenous Agriculture & Food Systems (IAFS) project is a national engagement led by Mokwateh in partnership with Farm Credit Canada (FCC). It brings together the knowledge, lived experiences, and perspectives of people involved in Indigenous agriculture and food systems across Canada, reflecting the distinct priorities and realities of communities and regions across the country.
Grounded in listening and learning, the project explores what is working, where barriers remain, and what is needed to support Indigenous agriculture and food systems in ways that reflect community priorities and values. The insights gathered will help guide future actions, partnerships, and opportunities for collaboration, contributing to a stronger, more inclusive agricultural landscape shaped by Indigenous knowledge and leadership.Vision

Agriculture and food systems connect people, communities, economies, and the lands and waters that sustain us. Building stronger shared food systems means ensuring Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and priorities are reflected in how the agriculture sector grows and evolves.
Farm Credit Canada’s commitment to reconciliation recognizes that a stronger and more inclusive agriculture sector depends on meaningful relationships and shared prosperity. The Indigenous Agriculture & Food Systems (IAFS) project brings this commitment to life through a collaboration between Farm Credit Canada and Mokwateh.
Led by Mokwateh, this national, multi-year engagement brought together Indigenous and industry voices to help shape how Farm Credit Canada can support reconciliation across agriculture. Through listening, shared learning, and relationship-building, the project is exploring opportunities to support shared, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food systems across Canada.

Workshops & Sessions
Since September 2025, the Indigenous Agriculture & Food Systems (IAFS) project has travelled across Canada to listen and learn.
Through 20 engagement sessions and gatherings at select conferences, people shared what Indigenous agriculture and food systems look like in their communities. Each conversation reflected different experiences and regional realities, while bringing forward common priorities related to land, food security, economic opportunities, and access to capital.
We are grateful to the communities that welcomed us and to every person who joined the conversation. While the sessions and workshops are now complete, your voices will continue to guide the work and help shape what comes next.
